KINGS RUNS OVER RAMPAGE
Comets set team records for total offense and rushing yards in 49-7, season-opening win
The Kings Comets (1-0) set team records for rushing yards in opening their 2011 season with a 49-7 win against the Goshen Rampage (0-2) Sunday afternoon at Lakota West High School in West Chester, Ohio.
Quarterback Chris Stanford led the way for the Comets, rushing for 124 yards on just four carries as Kings ran 23 times for 272 yards in the game. That total eclipsed the previous team mark of 258 rushing yards against the Ohio Swarm set on July 24, 2004.
After rushing for three yards to convert a third-and-two on his first carry, Stanford ran 55 yards for the game’s first touchdown on his second rushing attempt. Stanford’s final rushing attempt of the game resulted in a 52-yard touchdown on the opening possession of the second half to put the Comets ahead, 28-7.
Will White added 68 yards on eight carries and Fate Jackson had 56 yards on four carries, including a 48-yard touchdown around the right end. Marcus Harris had a 10-yard touchdown run among his three carries for 21 yards, and John Washington’s 6-yard touchdown run with 2:20 remaining in the game tied a team record of five rushing touchdowns in one game, also set against the Swarm in 2004.
Stanford completed 7-of-8 passes for 81 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown pass to Daryl Moore. Austin Goss was perfect on his three pass attempts, throwing for 116 yards, including a 60-yard catch and run by Terrence Maddox.
The Comets finished with 469 yards of offense, just short of the team record of 471 yards set against the Indiana Mustangs on August 1, 2009.
Goshen was limited to 80 yards of offense as 10 different Comet defenders combined for 16 tackles for a loss.
Kings defense held Goshen to minus-26 yards of offense in the second half.
Linebacker Larry Byndon led the defense with eight tackles, including three for a loss. Cam’ron Wrencher had two of the defense’s five sacks, with Carlos Davis, Gary Goines, and Kyle Thigpen each recording one.

The game was the second of a double-header hosted by the Comets at Lakota West. In the opening game, the Tri-State Sharks defeated the Trenton Trojans, 39-12.

COMETS FALL TO FIRE
Final drive falls shorts as Kings suffers first loss of season, 27-20, at Mt. Carmel
Isaiah Cheatham was stopped inside the 10-yard on the final play of the game as the Kings Comets lost for the first time this season, 27-20, to the Mt. Carmel Fire Saturday night at Anderson High School.
Kings broke the team record for rushing yards in a game it set earlier this season, picking up 302 yards on 38 carries, but the Comets were also limited to a season-low 42 passing yards.
Will White led a group of four players who had at least 59 rushing yards, picking up 88 yards on 12 carries. Cheatham added 80 yards and two carries and had both of the Comets rushing touchdowns, while starting quarterback Chris Stanford ran eight times for 72 yards and backup quarterback Austin Goss had 59 yards on six carries.
Mt. Carmel opened the game with an 8:33 drive that featured three fourth down conversions, the final coming on a 23-yard pass on a fourth-and-eight play.
The Comets countered by scoring two touchdowns in a span of 24 seconds, with Cheatham scoring on a 4-yard run up the middle and Alonzo Willis intercepting a pass on Mt. Carmel’s next play from scrimmage and bringing it back 49 yards for a score to put the Comets ahead, 12-7, with 0:00.7 remaining in the first quarter.
James Spikes’ sack on Mt. Carmel’s next play from scrimmage set the Fire back to within inches of their own goal line, but the Fire proceeded to go the remaining 99 yards for a touchdown to take a 13-12 lead they would take into halftime.
Kings opened the second half with six straight runs to regain the lead when Cheatham sprinted to the corner of the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown, but the Fire scored the remaining 14 points in the game while Kings failed to convert on two opportunities into the red zone.
First, the Fire picked off a pass after Kings had reached their 10-yard line, immediately cashing in with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Antonio Davis to Dyshawn Edwards three plays later to tie the score at 20.
A missed 36-yard field goal denied Mt. Carmel one chance to take the lead, but the Fire blocked the Comets first punt attempt of the season, setting them up at Kings 17-yard line. A pass interference call moved them up to the three, where Mt. Carmel was able to punch it in for a touchdown to lead, 27-20, with 4:11 remaining.
The teams traded turnovers, with the Comets finally regaining possession at their own 15. Three runs moved them to the 40, and two completions got Kings into Mt. Carmel territory. Cheatham further advanced the ball with a 16-yard run to the 33, but was stopped short of the goal line on the game’s final play.
Kings will be at the Northern Kentucky Bulldogs (3-1, 2-1) Sunday afternoon at Newport High School at 3 p.m. The Comets next home game will be July 9 against the Kentucky Stallions (1-3, 0-3) at Lakota West.

Records set in 28-22, overtime win at Northern Kentucky
Chris Stanford found Isaiah Cheatham over the middle for a 37-yard touchdown 6:19 into overtime, capping a pair of record-setting performances in the Comets (4-1, 3-1 HFL) 28-22 win against the Northern Kentucky Bulldogs (3-2, 2-2) Sunday afternoon at Newport High School in Newport, Ky.
Stanford broke James Frazier’s record for passing yards in a game, completing 11 of 18 passes for 314 yards, including four completions for 146 yards in overtime.
Cheatham set a record for receptions in a game with eight, surpassing the mark of seven set three times by Daryl Moore, and broke his own record for receiving yards in a game with 204. Cheatham’s total included three catches for 98 yards in overtime.
Both teams had a chance to win the game with field goals after the Bulldogs had rallied from a 19-7 deficit to tie the score at 22 on a 65-yard touchdown pass from T.J. Brown to Brian Ritter and a two-point run by Brown with 3:29 remaining in regulation.
Northern Kentucky got the ball back with 1:44 left in the fourth quarter and drove to the Comets 17-yard line, but Dustin Zink’s 35-yard field goal attempt as the quarter ended sailed wide right.
Stanford and Cheatham connected for a pair of passes totaling 61 yards on the first two plays of overtime, but Brandon Yingling’s 25-yard field goal attempt hit the left upright.
Kings forced a Northern Kentucky punt, and Stanford hit Barnett for a 48-yard gain before hitting Cheatham on the game-winning play.
Northern Kentucky opened the game by taking a 7-0 lead when Glenn Robinson hauled in an 8-yard touchdown pass to cap a 12-play, 8:37 drive.
The Comets answered with a five-play drive that culminated in Will White’s 4-yard touchdown run, but a failed extra point left the Comets behind, 7-6.
Kings moved ahead, 12-6, when Mike Crawford picked off a screen pass in the second quarter and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown.
The Comets nearly added to the lead just before halftime, but Phillip Barnett was tripped up at the 3-yard line by Jerrell Owes on a 56-yard pass play and Kings was unable to run another play before the clock expired.
Kings was able to push its lead to 19-7 when Cheatham took a pass over the middle and ran for a 72-yard touchdown pass, but Northern Kentucky scored on a pair of touchdowns from Brown to Ritter in the fourth quarter sandwiched around a 27-yard field goal by Yingling.

Chris Stanford threw three touchdown passes and a missed extra point enabled the Kings Comets (5-1, 4-1 HFL) to hold on for a 21-20 win against Ohio Eagles (7-1, 4-1) Saturday night at Bellbrook High School in Bellbrook, Ohio.
The Eagles entered the game ranked No.1 in the American Football New Today Class AA Summer Rankings. The Comets were ranked No. 14 in the same poll.
Stanford connected with Damian Cogar on a 23-yard touchdown on the opening possession of the second half to give Kings its first lead of the game, 21-14, and the Comets were able to withstand several scoring threats throughout the rest of the half.
After reaching Comets territory on four of its next five possessions, the Eagles finally broke through after Mike Brown’s 11-yard punt return set them up at Kings 31-yard line.
Tristan Murray ran through several tackles on a 22-yard run to the 9, and two plays later scored on a 10-yard touchdown with 4:03 remaining in the game. J.T. Kafury’s extra point was wide left, however, keeping the Comets ahead, 21-20.
A three-and-out gave the Eagles one more chance to move ahead, but Murray was stopped for a loss on first down and three straight incompletion passes gave the Comets the ball back to run out the final 1:19.
The Comets outgained the Eagles in the first half, 194 yards to 86, but Chad Woodfork’s 51-yard interception return for a touchdown forced Kings to play catch-up for much of the half.
Stanford hit Phillip Barnett over the middle on a fourth-down pass that resulted in a 47-yard touchdown on Kings next possession to tie the score at 7.
The Eagles moved back ahead on an 11-yard touchdown run by Murray in the second quarter, but Kings answered when Stanford found Barnett for a 7-yard touchdown 38 seconds before halftime.
The Eagles held Kings to 52 yards of offense in the second half, 48 of which came on their scoring drive to start the half.
DeShon “Twin” Smith led Kings defense with eight tackles, followed by six from Tommy Sewell. James Spikes had five tackles and was in on two of the Comets three sacks. Mitchell Burch and Gary Goins also were in on a sack, and the Comets were also credited with six quarterback hurries on the Eagles 20 passing attempts. Austin Goss had an interception.
The Eagles were held to 55 net passing yards, but totaled 119 yards on the ground despite a 35 yard loss on a bad punt snap.
Kings is off for the Fourth of July weekend and will receive a forfeit win for its game against the Kentucky Stallions scheduled for July 9. The Comets will return to action July 16, hosting the Central Ohio Spartans (2-5, 2-3) at 7 p.m. at Lakota West High School.

COMETS MAKE SHORT WORK OF SPARTANS
Kings routs Central Ohio for 40-0 victory
The Kings Comets (7-1, 6-1 HFL) piled up over 300 yards of offense in just one half of football, defeating the Central Ohio Spartans (2-7, 2-5), 40-0, Saturday evening in a Heartland Football League game at Lakota West High School in West Chester.
The game was called at halftime due to a combination of the heat and lack of players for the Spartans, who began the game with 15 players.
Quarterback Chris Stanford had a hand in nearly 200 of Kings 319 yards of offense.
Stanford threw for 153 yards on just four completions and ran for another 43 yards on three carries. Stanford also threw three touchdowns and ran for one.
Isaiah Cheatham started the scoring with the first of his three touchdowns, running three yards up the middle for a touchdown.
Stanford followed with a 16-yard touchdown run and finished off the first quarter with a 45-yard touchdown pass to Phillip Barnett to put Kings ahead 19-0.
Stanford and Cheatham combined for a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter, a short pass than Cheatham turned into an 80-yard touchdown and a tipped pass that Cheatham caught for a 7-yard touchdown.
Cheatham finished with three receptions for 108 yards.
J.T. Harper led the Comets in rushing with a 46-yard gain after a lateral, with Will White adding 37 yards on three carries and Keith Brooks gaining 26 yards on his lone carry of the game.
The Comets completed the scoring when Will White blocked a punt in the end zone that was recovered by Kyle Thigpen, prompting a running clock to be used for the final six minutes of the first half.
Defensively, the Comets were credited with eight quarterback hurries on 16 Central Ohio passing attempts, not including James Spikes’ sack. Mitchell Burch was credited with three hurries with Spikes getting credit for two more as each of the Spartans final five pass attempts resulted in passes thrown away in order to avoid a sack.
DeShon Smith led the defense with six tackles, three of which went for a loss. Larry Byndon followed with four tackles, two for a loss as the Spartans gained positive yards on just eight of their 30 plays in the game.
Mike Crawford and Austin Goss added interceptions for the Comets.
Anthony Brown was responsible for all three receptions for Central Ohio, totaling 40 yards and matched Christopher Davis as the Spartans leading tackler with three stops.

COMETS PUT DOWN BULLDOGS
Six sacks, 50-yard TD run by Stanford sends Kings to second round with 20-13 win
Chris Stanford put the Comets ahead with a 50-yard touchdown run with 10:15 remaining in the game and Kings defense stopped Northern Kentucky twice in Comets territory as the Comets (10-2) defeated the Northern Kentucky Bulldogs (7-5), 20-13, in the first round of the Heartland Football League playoffs Saturday night at Lakota West High School in West Chester, Ohio.
The Comets took a 13-3 lead when Chris Stanford found Daryl Moore for a 6-yard touchdown to cap the opening drive of the second half, but the Bulldogs responded by scoring on each of their next two possessions.
T. J. Brown hit Dale Golsby for a 12-yard touchdown with 5:44 remaining in the third quarter, and, after a three-and-out by the Comets, Northern Kentucky drove into position for Dustin Zink to tie the score at 13-13 with a 24-yard field goal on the first play of the second half.
Northern Kentucky recovered an onside kick immediately after the tying field goal, but a sack by James Frazier forced the Bulldogs to punt without picking up a first down.
After Stanford completed a nine-yard sideline pass to Phillip Barnett to convert a third-and-six from the Comets 41, Stanford broke his game-winning run down the left sideline, weaving through the Bulldogs defense along the way.
A face mask on Rodney Stone’s 31-yard kick return enabled the Bulldogs to start their next drive at Kings’ 40-yard line, but Northern Kentucky could manage only one first down before sacks by Frazier and Mitchell Burch forced a punt.
The Comets were able to run the clock down to 1:35 with a nine-play drive that gave possession back to Northern Kentucky at their own 36.
Three completions, including a 30-yard pass to Glenn Robinson, got Northern Kentucky to Kings 20-yard line with 21 seconds left, but a holding call pushed the Bulldogs back and Burch, Frazier, and James Spikes converged on Brown for a sack on the final play of the game.
The Comets had jumped ahead 6-0 on their first possession of the game when Stanford found Damian Cogar for a 71-yard touchdown pass.
Carlos Davis blocked a 37-yard field goal attempt by the Bulldogs on the opening possession of the game, but Zink was able to convert a 44-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter for Northern Kentucky’s only points of the first half.
Stanford completed seven of 14 passes for 145 yards and ran seven times for 78 yards.
Burch led a defense that finished with six sacks, recording two of the sacks and 12 tackes. Spikes and Frazier also had two sacks, while DeShon Smith had six tackles and two pass breakups.

COMETS SEASON ENDS IN A HEARTBREAKER
Deflected pass caught in end zone gives Mt. Carmel 41-39 win against Kings in HFL South Semifinals
Maurice Lovett caught a deflected pass in the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the game, ending the Kings Comets (10-3) season with a 41-39 defeat to the Mt. Carmel Fire (11-1) in the Heartland Football League South Conference semifinals Saturday night at Taft High School in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The touchdown was the fourth thrown by Fire quarterback Antonio Davis to four different receivers as Mt. Carmel overcame a 19-point halftime deficit.
Comets quarterback Chris Stanford also threw four touchdowns, including one on each of the Comets three first-quarter possessions.
Phillip Barnett, who caught four passes for 104 yards in the game, hauled in two of those touchdowns to give Kings a 19-14 lead.
Will White added two scores in the second quarter to expand the Comets lead.
After Mt. Carmel scored on Davis touchdown passes on each of its first two possessions, Mitchell Burch intercepted a pitch at Kings 11-yard line and returned it 49 yards to set up White’s 3-yard plunge up the middle to put Kings ahead 27-14.
On defense, White picked off a tipped pass from his linebacker spot and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown to put the Comets up, 33-14, going into halftime.
Mt. Carmel scored on each of its first two possessions of the second half to pull to within five, 33-28.
Davis hit Antwoine Higgins for a 29 yard touchdown, and Demareay McDonald’s interception set up a 2-yard touchdown run by D.J. Alexander.
Kings pushed its lead back to 11 points when Stanford connected with Daryl Moore for his second touchdown catch of the game, a 17-yard pass with 2:09 remaining in the third quarter.
A 47-yard punt return by Mike Huseman set up a 1-yard touchdown by Alexander to cut the Comets lead to four, 39-35, with 11:44 remaining in the game.
Kings converted two third downs on a 10-play drive that followed, but a fourth down pass fell incomplete, giving the Fire possession back at their own 10-yard line with 5:19 remaining.
A pair of face mask penalties moved Mt. Carmel to its own 45, but the Comets appeared to have the Fire stopped there.
After facing a third-and-23, a fourth-down pass by Davis fell incomplete, but a roughing the passer penalty allowed the drive to continue. Mt. Carmel advanced to the 12, but faced a fourth-and-nine with five seconds left when Davis launched his desperation pass to the back of the end zone that was knocked away before falling into the hands of Lovett.
Davis completed 21 of 36 passes for 347 yards for Mt. Carmel. Stanford was 11 of 19 passing for 242 yards for the Comets.
